The Programs
1. Trauma/Phobia Technique
This is one of the most notable and known techniques in the NLP
catalogue as its profound effect has been demonstrated for many decades.
Its purpose is to greatly diminish the emotional response to any event
in a person’s history including physical and/or emotional abuse,
assaults, accidents, and, of course, the debilitating effects of any
phobia.
Although the temptation for a new student is to apply the technique to
the worst possible events of their lifetimes, I encourage everyone to
start with smaller, less emotionally-charged events in order to, first,
become familiar with the steps.
2. The Swish
This technique was developed to assist an individual with changing from one state to another – automatically and as the stimulus for the original, undesirable state is presented in the world or in imagination.
This can be considered as close to an all-purpose technique as is available in NLP, but please be aware that is doesn’t accomplish everything.
However, examples of where the technique can be readily applied include:
• Fear of public speaking
• Programming the switch from a highly-stressed state to one of greater calm and resourcefulness.
• Breaking of bad habits and developing more desirable behaviors.
3. Responding To Criticism
This technique is useful when criticism is received from others and when directed at self. It is also worthwhile when the criticism is only imagined or perceived. Even if a criticism is well-intentioned by others or self, a more resourceful response may still be desirable.
4. Responding To Loss
People experience losses of many kinds through their lives. Some losses are more tolerable than others – depending on the individual. Some losses are hardly bearable. This technique was developed to address all kinds of losses – relationships, property, health, opportunities, pets and the loss of other significant people.
This technique, for those who may wish to consider it as such, is also offered as a form of “pre-grieving”. That is, as a preparation for a loss that is inevitable.
5. The Timeline
This technique requires more attention-to-detail than the other programs in this series and is offered as a portion of another NLP-process called The Reimprint.
While a stretch of the imagination is also helpful, participating in this real-time exercise can be profoundly useful when addressing one’s history with a desire to overcome long-held resentments, bitterness, blame and undesirable emotional response to events in one’s past.
Included in this process is the opportunity to develop and apply any number of other, useful emotional and intellectual resources that were not available in a person’s history and applying those resources to the presenting memories.
6. The A.M.E.R.I.C.A. Model
This is a strategy to “get things done” at the behavioral level. Some of the steps have NLP components while others are logical and reasonable follow-ons.
I urge everyone who is participating with these programs to relax, enjoy, fool around with and otherwise experiment with these exercises. There are no benefits to making a chore of any of this. Be easy with yourself and feel good about your own potentials.
